Lip flips and fillers are very quick non-surgical procedures that have become more well known in recent years with celebrity pouts becoming popularized. While both procedures are very popular and are both injectables, there are some key differences between the two:
Lip Flips
Lip flips are a more recent cosmetic trend. It was popularized on TikTok for it's subtle, but pouty, results. The procedure uses a neuromodulator (think Botox, Xeomin, Dysport, etc) to relax the orbicularis muscle in your top lip. This encourages the lip to relax and "flip" upward slightly, giving the look of a fuller upper lip. The procedure is quick and has no downtime, and can also help those self conscious about gummy smiles or looking to reduce fine lines created by the pursing motion (like puckering or drinking from a straw). It certainly can cost less than lip fillers, and the result is more natural looking, but do be advised - it will not have the same volume enhancing results as fillers would. Results from fillers also tend to last a bit longer than those achieved by lip flips.
Lip Fillers
Lip fillers inject a hyaluronic acid based gel into the lips to enhance volume and give definition. At our location, we apply a topical numbing cream prior to treatment to help decrease the level of discomfort for our patients. The lidocaine in the filler also helps to diminish discomfort as well. Results are usually seen immediately, though there might be some mild swelling right after the procedure. Though pricier, the results do typically last longer like mentioned above, and the amount of volume you want in both the upper and lower lip is easily controlled via how much filler is injected. The hyaluronic acid content also helps to promote hydration to the treatment area.
Which One Should I Choose?
Well, it honestly depends on what aesthetic you're going for. If you are looking for more volume and dramatic results, lip fillers are definitely more up your alley. However, if you're looking for something more subtle, a lip flip is a great option. We definitely suggest scheduling a consultation first for you to consult with a trusted cosmetic provider, ourselves or otherwise. It's definitely more advantageous to discuss the pros and cons of each treatment with a trained professional than mulling over it alone, as different factors such as age, lip vermillion, and the like, to take into consideration. Consulting with your provider will definitely help your results look the best they can.
